GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITES & DUTIES:
The Department of Scientific Research and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the University of Delaware have been awarded a collaborative grant by the Division of Materials Science at the National Science Foundation (NSF) to investigate heavy-metal soap formation, a deterioration process that affects hundreds of oil paintings in art collections across the world. The proposed approach includes solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), single-sided NMR, micro and nanotomography, the latter in collaboration with scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), to characterize the dynamics of the processes.
The successful candidate will be primarily based at the Department of Scientific Research at the Met, but will collaborate closely with scientists at the University of Delaware and Brookhaven National Laboratory. Travel and accommodation costs for attending conferences are covered by grant funds. He/she will be expected to integrate into both parts of the program.
The position is for 14 months.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILIES & DUTIES:
Collaborates with PIs, consultant, and graduate students at the University of Delaware (UDel).
Supervises and guides graduate students at UDel.
Conducts analyses by techniques such as cross-polarization magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (CP-MAS NMR) and other solid-state NMR methods, single-sided NMR (MOUSE®), and synchrotron nanotomography, the last in collaboration with scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Provide the bridge between analytical science and the cultural heritage/conservation community.
Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience and Skills:
· Experimental and theoretical experience in the characterization of diffusion processes in soft matter and porous materials.
· An interest in applying these techniques to conservation/cultural heritage issues
Knowledge and Education:
· PhD in Materials Science, Physics or similar field
